...is something I believe in very, very strongly. My recent announcement that I would make a copy of DRAWING OUT THE DRAGONS available for free to any and all Librarians who request one has resulted in a flurry of emails with the subject line, "Oh Captain, my Captain - Please send your Dragons" and dozens of copies of the book being distributed. In the coming days and weeks, I expect that number to multiply tenfold, and more.

A friend of mine asked about taking it one step further, by perhaps creating a fund that people can donate to, so that I could give out copies when and where they are needed at my discretion (as I've authorized librarians to do with kids who may really need this book, but don't have the means to buy their own copy) so I've been thinking it over - and that's not enough. I already give away lots of copies, but just accepting donations so I can afford to continue to do so limits my ability to help people to just those I come across personally.

To really make copies of this book available to people who need to read it requires something more - a Dragon Army, of readers who will spread the word, and an organization better equipped than I am to find and help those readers, and give them the books they need.

Fortunately, I know of just such an organization.

When I agreed to join the Advisory Board of Kids Need To Read, the excellent charity founded by pals PJ Haarsma and Nathan Fillion, I had already done a number of fundraisers for them (including raising nearly a thousand dollars just for posting an old photo of myself online), so I was already supportive of their work and their goals. Donating money to this worthy charity would be very worthwhile, as would my donating copies of my book for the schools they serve - so I'm going to do both.

The more books I'm able to sell, the more books I'll be able to give away through KNTR - so I'm going to give readers everywhere a challenge to help me do that, right here, right now.

DotD is available in several formats, and from several vendors - but the one with the highest visibility is Amazon's Kindle Store. The word about DotD has only just started to spread, so the book's highest ranking has only hit around 17,000 (although the reviews have been stellar). My novel HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS was, early on, as high as the 500's, but that was due more to the movie deal with the Harry Potter producers than anything else - and that was well before I built up the readership I have now with the Imaginarium Geographica novels. But I think we can do better with this book - a lot better. So I want you to help spread the word and boost the sales, and in turn, help me support Kids Need To Read.

If DotD reaches the Top 100 books in the Kindle Store, I will donate $1000 to KNTR.

Furthermore, I will donate an additional $1000 for every month it appears at least once in the Top 100 books, without limitation.

I think that's very, very doable - so I'm going to add to the challenge, and add to the incentive:

If DotD reaches the Top 10 list of books sold in the Kindle Store, I will donate $10,000 to KNTR.

And, when readers come to this book, and librarians, and educators and booksellers and my Dragon Army continue to promote it, and sales increase even more, it will rise higher in the rankings - and I pledge, here and now, that when DRAWING OUT THE DRAGONS reaches the Number One spot in book sales in the Kindle Store, I will donate $100,000 to Kids Need To Read.

And, at every stage along the way, I intend to donate, in whatever format they need, as many copies as KNTR-affiliated schools need to make sure that the kids who could benefit from both this book, and the others my donations provide, NEVER, EVER, go without.

I wrote DRAWING OUT THE DRAGONS: A Meditation on Art, Destiny, and the Power Of Choice based on the motivational presentation I give at schools, and I believe it is the one book I've written that can be given to anyone, of any age, in any position in life. And with your help, I think we can make it possible to give it to EVERYONE - but especially the readers who need it the most. So please, help me to make sure that Kids have ALL the books they need to read by buying this book for yourself, and for people you love, and by including this link in as many places as possible: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004VN31NK

Every Revolution begins with a choice. Our Revolution begins right now, when you choose to help me do this. Thank you in advance, for helping me to do this thing that I believe in most, and for helping Kids who Need To Read.

awesome
This is wonderful. This instigated me to finally purchase the ebook. I've been wanting to but just hadn't. This tipped the scales. I also posted this to my Facebook friends and am about to blog about it. Kids DEFINITELY need books (good books)! Thank you for your writing and your support of children and reading!

you are amazing
I was reading this while at lunch w/ a friend and could have cried out of happiness at how awesome you are.
I started volunteering w/ KNTR right after phxcc last year and love them all to bits and pieces. I will be spreading the word around to help.

Gave you some more signal boost on my FB page - though it's likely to cross paths with others. (So many mutual friends!)

Thank you for being you, James. Always an inspiration!

Tweeted and LJed and Facebooked. "Thank you" doesn't seem big enough for what you are doing, but it's all I have right now.

That's awesome. Thank you, Heidi! Would you consider posting a review on Amazon as well? The attention those are attracting seems to be a good booster for the book as well.
